Its the max amount of models the hl engine can load into your system memory, I'm not sure of the limit though :\.

model limit means how many guns are available. or player/zombie models.
theres another limit called the entity limit, thats how many objects can be placed on a map without chrashing HL. a entity is a static object thats no longer static and does something, and this is about anything on the map. a gun, a fire, a player, a destructable wall.... |

Anything but a plain ol' brush is an entity in terms of mapping .
