Hey guys.

So after a long time of playing this game, I want to try making some maps. I looked at the tutorial stickies and a lot of those links didn't work for me so I guess they are outdated.

So could somebody help me out? I have very little experience in making maps period, besides opening up Hammer, realizing that I probably don't know what I'm doing with it and closing it lol. So is there a good guide I should start with? How hard would you say it is to learn, and how long do you think it might take?

I use 3.5 however it wont show the models unless you know how to edit QC code.
If you want to use it I'll post the Qc command later.

Hammer 3.4

There seems to be a problem here. The page says in the "textures" tab in Hammer config to use halflife.wad, decals.wad, xeno.wad and liquids.wad. It says they should be in the valve folder which is in the half-life folder but they're not. I even did a search on my cpu for .wad and it says the only one of those four I have is decals.wad in the brainbread folder and I don't think that's the right one anyway. I added you on MSN, maybe you want to talk on there?

Download CFG Scape. http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/files/files/gcfscape131.exe
Find the main Half Life pak and extract Xeno HalfLife Water wads from inside it.

It seems I don't have the pak file either. I don't know why. I just downloaded Half Life on this computer a few days ago too. I guess I'll find where to download it. Should I just skip the pak file and get the wad files?

You have the pak file, without it your not running Half-Life or any of the mods.
Sense I'm a nice guy...

Well I did a search for pak on my cpu and it didn't find halflife.pak. Maybe it's called something else. Anyway thanks for uploading the wads. Any other wads you would use? I'm guessing brainbread.wad would be good lol

So I think I'm ready to start. I'll let you know if I have any problems

Yeah, having problems already. The guide says:

QUOTE
Hold and drag your cursor diagonally up and to the right about 4 squares (this assumes that you have Snap: On Grid: 64 at the bottom-right) and let go.

I don't have that on the bottom right. Is that important?

Yeah that's cool. How old are ya? Did ya get everything you wanted?

Anyway I'm probably gonna go to the forum on that website you gave me and ask about it there. I hope I won't need to use 3.5 because I don't know qc code. What about making skins, is that any easier? I saw you made the suitcase look like an Umbrella case from RE. That's pretty cool.

Skining Aka Texturing is a compleately different style then Mapping.

You will need.

1. Image Editing Program. (Alot of folks use Photoshop, I say Pffth to that.)
Reccomending..
1.)The Gimp.
http://www.gimp.org/
Same features as Photoshop, but more user friendly.

2. Model Viewer
Reccomending..
Ditch that crappy Half-Life model viewer.
Get Jed's Half-Life model viewer.
http://www.wunderboy.org/apps/jhlmv.php Scroll down theirs 3 Files GET THEM ALL.

3. Model Decompiler
Reccomending
Milkshape 3D However if you have left you registered 30$ copy on your other computer, or some other mistake...
Those 2 extra files you got with Jed's allow you to De-compile thought Jed's.

4. QC Knowlage (THIS IS A KEY ASPECT LEARN IT OR GO PLAY SOMTHING LIKE THE SIMS OR DOOM [I don't have a problem with eather game tbh.])

OPEN QC's WITH NOTEPAD AND ALWAYS SAVE!!

QC Tips.
Editing Origins (V-Models/NPC's View location.)
Origin Preview

In the qc to edit Origin type in $origin #.## #.## #.## Replace # with a Number. The first #.## is X (Left/Right <--->) 2Nd Is Y (CLOSER/farther) 3Rd is Z (Up/Down)
You can use -'s also...
5.00 0.00 0.00 = Move Model 5 Units --->Right
-5.00 0.00 0.00 = Move Model 5 Units Left<----

Re-Sequence
Say you have a model that inside it's Qc theirs 5 Sequences
$sequence "deploy" "deploy" fps 45
$sequence "idle" "idle" fps 45
$sequence "idle" "idle" fps 45
$sequence "shot" "shot" fps 65
$sequence "reload" "reload" fps 60

And you want it to replace the... Axe that only has 3...
$sequence "idle3" "idle3" fps 12
$sequence "stab" "stab" fps 33
$sequence "midslash2" "midslash2" fps 37

You Edit the first QC (The Replacemts) Like so...
---THIS-----
$sequence "deploy" "deploy" fps 45
$sequence "idle" "idle" fps 45
$sequence "idle" "idle" fps 45
$sequence "shot" "shot" fps 65
$sequence "reload" "reload" fps 60

--To--
$sequence "idle" "idle" fps 45
$sequence "shot" "shot" fps 65
$sequence "shot" "shot" fps 65
And Save then Compile.

DO NOT COPY ONE MODELS QC SEQUENCES INTO ANOTHERS!!!!
IF YOU DO AND ASK ME WHY IT WONT WORK I'LL GIVE YOU A VASECTOMY WITH A RUSTY 2 INCH/5CM
NAIL!!

Well I made a box and even put some zombie spawn points and a player spawn point in it. Cool huh? Two things I haven't figured out is how to put marines and weapons. It says to use bb_spawn_zombie for the marines also but I don't know how. I don't know where to find the weapons either because the guide says use bb_equipment somehow but I don't know how.

Use monster_human_grunt for Hgrunts.
And right-click on bb_equpiment and under weapon in the box type..
weapon_benelli,44sw,m16,stoner,winchester,p225,sawed..ect choose one.
So it would look like..

weapon_benelli.
