I made a thread on a G card forum so far no replies, this is it...
' I was wondering is there a way to destinguish whether it's the GPU or the PSU causing the problem, either the GPU is broken or the PSU isn't giving it enough power. System ... AMD athlon 3800 + x2 x64 Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT 2gb DDR RAM Mobo: Asus A8NE-FM (i think) PSU: FSP350-60HLC Edit: Using Rive Tuner 100% fan speed manuel control, my GPU in-game stays around 80 degrees, which is much cooler and the computer does not switch off. But can I use this as a permanent solution? Also the noise is annoying. I'd like to know whether or not to buy a new PSU a new GPU or a new computer please, thank you. Is that a 350W PSU running that? I think that's 50 watts shy of the minimum recommended PSU rating for that family of NVIDIA cards. Even if your PSU turns out to not be the cause of your problems, that's borderline WAY to small for a PSU today. At least anything NOT running an IGP or entry level video card.
Also, what version of video drivers are you running? There was a BBAAAAADDD version released not too long ago, 196.75 I think that would cause your video card to overheat by not spinning up the GPU fan when needed. If you're running the 196.75 drivers, install the new version ASAP. I think 197.45 or something similar are current depending on your OS. Though... when did your problems start, and was anything on your PC changed just prior? And just to clarify; this is an issue where your PC shuts down or reboots while in-game? -------------------- Still mapping away!! |

The game will stop, the screen goes black and. No actions are available as if the computer is shut down. But the computer is still turned on and the fans are spinning.
It is a 350w PSU (might buy a 500w thank you Shootme) I have latest Drivers 197... Edit: I have underclocked the card. From 650 to 600 and 900 to 850. The temperature IDLE is down to 65c which is not bad. Yet to check it in-game. Will post results. What you describe sounds like the Windows "Hibernation" mode, though it could be your PC halting due to insufficient power or some other component (possibly your vid card) failing. .. So, when it does this, there is no sound (or the annoying repeating 1/2 second or so of sound), no HDD activity (LED isn't blinking), and you can't toggle caps lock/num lock/scroll lock on your keyboard? Also, have you ever seen any artifacts on-screen when in-game or even just in Windows? Things like the green-grid-of-death or off-color blocks in textures? -------------------- Still mapping away!! |
